About the Lodge

The Burkeville Lodge is a vacation spot for visually impaired people   to gather with their family and friends.

It was established in 1960 by the Virginia Association of Workers for the Blind and is located in the small rural town of Burkeville Virginia.  The property, which was donated to the Virginia Association of Workers for the Blind, consisted of a brick- one story building with three dorm rooms which slept about twelve people and a two- story farmhouse which could accommodate ten or twelve people.  Since then, the farmhouse has been torn down and several new buildings with semi-private and private rooms and a dining room have been added.  There are covered walkways, a gazebo and flower gardens.

A Scenic Forest Trail at the Burkeville LodgeWhat makes the Lodge different is that it has very low rates and offers accessible accommodations.  Meals are buffet style and guests gather at specified times.  The grounds feature an outdoor swimming pool (a lifeguard is on duty for morning and afternoon swim times) and a nature trail completely surrounded by railings.   A stocked pond is also on the grounds and features a trail with railings to and around the pond and benches on the docks.

When you’re not eating great food, you can swim, fish, hike or enjoy the quiet atmosphere in the gazebo.  Bingo, card games, and local bands round out the entertainment. Day trips to historical sites, shows, and plays and other points of interest are also available. In addition, the Burkeville lodge offers special events for major holidays throughout the year

The Burkeville Lodge is supported by Lions Clubs in Virginia, fundraisers by members of the Virginia Association of Workers for the Blind and donations.  The lodge, which can accommodate 38, will only open if there are 12 or more paying guests. A separate two-story house can accommodate up to 10 more guests when necessary.

If you are looking for a change of scenery, accessible accommodations and fellowship, the Burkeville Lodge is for you!
